Habitat Build to Begin in the Spring
At a July meeting, the Vermilion Adopt-a-Home committee decided to postpone the construction of the Habitat house until spring. Bryce Ashlin-Mayo, chair of the committee, explained, "If we had made a major fundraising appeal and push, we could have built this fall, but with the recent flood tying up so many contractors trying to get people's flooded homes repaired, it makes sense to postpone our build until the spring." Fund raising efforts will continue through the winter, with about $40,000 left to be raised. Ashlin-Mayo added, "We will have everything in place to make a quick start in the spring and have a family in by fall. We are excited and anxious to get started on the actual building, but it is just a better idea to wait until April or May." Meanwhile the community continues to support Habitat through donations and fund raising events. The next one is the Rotary Pancake Breakfast at the Businesses' Garage Sale on Sept. 23. All the proceeds will go to Vermilion Adopt-a-Home. Also at the Garage Sale will be a concession run by Habitat volunteers. If you want to get involved, and have a few spare hours on Sept. 23, contact Brenda Ritz at 780-853-5213 or Linda Jacejko at 780-853-5497.
